PJ Engelbrecht grew up in a newspaper family, first working as a printer's devil while still in grade school. She earned her MA with Distinction in English at one major Chicago university and completed further doctoral coursework at another.

A published poet and theorist, Engelbrecht taught college writing, lit, and women's studies for 10 years and then worked as a journalist before co-founding Chicago web design firm duografix in 2000. In 2008, she launched her solo consultancy to provide web services, coming full circle in the publishing realm.

But that's just one story. Life, both abstract and concrete.

As a tyke, PJ spent many happy hours exploring lumber yards and hardware stores, dogging her dad, learning about tools and carpentry by "osmosis" and observation. Later, in college, PJ discovered an unexpected talent in the clay studio, throwing pots—some sold! Yet words were her livelihood, her profession.

Still, PJ enjoyed extending her skills in creative media, such as photography and drawing. Graphic design, typography, and digital image manipulation have been integral to her web work. And then a casual xmas project making wooden music boxes reignited that early passion for wood, tools, handwork.

Woodcarving, both art and craft. Like life itself.
